All cats carry tabby genes. All black cats have either ticked, spotted, mackerel or classic markings - but if they are very good blacks the markings and the background are all exactly the same colour, so the markings are invisible. Does it carry the chocolate or dilute gene, or any other recessive? All these could change the background colour slightly, allowing the markings to be seen. :(

I'm usually pretty ok on genetics.I know all of the cats are tabbies of some description...However this kitten is all black and the stripes are black too their is no different base undercoat that one would expect from a black masking an agouti, no grey, beige etc. I would have expected the cat to be black all through or what I call liquorice if a bad black The breeder pointed out that the kitten looked like a black tabby and I thought hmm black masking tabby.. Thanks anyway Time will tell he is only a baby.

These are "ghost markings" - the kittens is a solid black but is showing a vestigial pattern, this will fade as he gets older. It's not at all unusual to see this in solid coloured kittens.
